More than 12,000 people have sent appeals to Russia’s Investigative Committee demanding that Alexey Navalny’s body be released to his family, reports the human rights project OVD-Info.
“Only solidarity can help get justice for Alexey Navalny and his family now. Yesterday, OVD-Info started collecting appeals to the Investigative Committee. Together, we’re demanding the release of Alexey’s body. In less than 24 hours, over 12,000 people submitted appeals,” reads a post on the project’s Telegram channel.
OVD-Info emphasized that Navalny’s body should be handed over to his family as soon as possible so that he can be with them “at least after death.” The project also called for an immediate investigation into his death.
Over the first two days of memorial protests for Alexey Navalny across Russia, police arrested 401 people in 36 cities, reports the human rights project OVD-Info.
Police arrested the largest number of protesters in St. Petersburg: more than 200. They kept 38 of them in overnight custody.
According to a statement from the St. Petersburg courts’ press service, 42 people were arrested for participating in the demonstrations and given sentences ranging from one to six days in jail. Another nine were fined amounts ranging from 10,000 to 15,000 rubles ($109-$163).
Moscow courts have also begun handing out sentences to protesters. Three people who were arrested on Friday and charged with disobeying police orders were each given 15 days in jail.
