Hamas militants are being used as disposable human tools to accomplish Iran’s and Russia’s strategic objectives, in the same meat grinder-like manner with which Putin deployed PMC Wagner fighters in Ukraine. Gaza, in effect, has become the Mideast’s Bakhmut. To that end, according to reports in the Wall Street Journal and Washington Post, Hamas has been receiving weapons, training, logistical support and funding from Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps — and, arguably, Russia as well.

October could have played out far differently if only Deif, Khamenei and Putin had put the Palestinian people first. Diplomatic progress was being made between Israel and Saudi Arabia. Riyadh, in exchange for U.S. weapons and “a civil nuclear program including in-country uranium enrichment,” was on a path to formally recognize Israel.

Israelis and Palestinians were to benefit as well. Jerusalem would benefit from trade and defense ties with Saudi Arabia and deeper regional economic and military integration into the predominantly Sunni Arab world. The Palestinian Authority (PA) would benefit from Israeli concessions — the transfer of parts of the West Bank currently under full Israeli control to the governance of the PA; the “complete cessation” of Israeli settlement growth in the West Bank; resumption of Saudi financial support to the PA; the reopening of the U.S. consulate in Jerusalem; and the resumption of U.S.-brokered negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians.
