Libya has begun a week of celebrations to mark 40 years since the coup that brought Colonel Muammar Gaddafi to power in the North African Country.

Soldiers and dancers performed for African heads of state invitedto the festivities by col Gadaffi,who’s the longest-serving leader in both Africa and the Arab world.

Ceremonial horsemen stood on their horses as a displayof their skill at a lavish event put on at a military field outside the capital.

In the other planned display over the next week handreds of dancers musicians will chart 12,000 years of Libya’s history.

Once regarded as a pariah by West,Colonel Gaddafi began a return to the international fold after Libya took responsibility for the 1988 bombing of a Pan Am plane over the Scottish town of Lockerbie.

But the hero’s welcome given in Tripoli to Lockerbie bomber Abdel Ali Mohammed al-Megrahi after his release by Scottish authorities last month has angered many in the US and the UK.
